Nalbandian (1906 -1993) produced this history painting in 1949: a jubilee year both for the Communist party and for the regime. It was shown at two major exhibitions: the exhibition of painting from the Soviet Union and 'Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin in art'. The painting depicts a contemporary incident - a meeting of the Politburo - as if it were an event of unparalleled historical significance. The meeting had already been preceded by enormous radio and press publicity, the edition of 'Pravda' published on 24 October 1948 being almost entirely devoted to it. The painting shows members of Stalin's inner circle - Vyatcheslav Molotov, Nikolai Shvernik, Nikolai Bulganin, Artyom Mikoyan, Nikita Khruschev, Andrei Andreyev, Alexei Kosygin, Kliment Voroshilov, Georgi Malenkov and Lazar Kaganovich - bent over a plan for the future of forestry: "The plan for protective afforestation, for the introduction of rotational agriculture with grassland, and for the building of ponds and water reservoirs to ensure high and stable production in the steppe and forest steppe areas of the European region of the USSR." The leader himself is depicted in the uniform of a Field Marshall, without his many medals, but with the gold star of a 'Hero of the Soviet Union'. His staff listen in rapt faith and admiration to Stalin's explanation of his 'great plan for the transformation of nature'. Like some divine architect, Stalin points to some key feature of the plan. In the background, a portrait of Lenin contributes to the devotional atmosphere. These two, Lenin and Stalin, were presented as the infallible fathers of the nation, dedicated to achieving the happiness of the people. In this painting, the artist uses the iconography of the Christian theme of the Last Supper in the service of the new 'religion of the state': Stalin stands at the head of the table, dressed in his almost gold-coloured uniform and surrounded by his disciples, like a saviour extending the promise of a golden future. The very different reality of the situation is exemplified by the fact that he had Lavrenty Beria shot in the summer of 1953 and ordered that his likeness be expunged from the painting.
