		This painting was specially created for the 1950 exhibition of 'Painting from the Soviet Union'. It depicts the grandiose celebration of Stalin's 70th birthday in 1949. Stalin is shown in apotheosis, the indisputable supreme leader of the state, inspirer and organiser of historic victories. The grand staircase leading upwards, the hands that the applauding multitude reach out to the birthday 'hero' and the open doors are all reminiscent of the Royal Door in an iconostasis and accentuate the exalted and jubilant mood of the masses. Stalin is presented to the people as a celestial figure descended to this earthly realm, at hand but unattainable. He is flanked by his subordinates, party members and members of the government (Nikolai Bulganin, Artyom Mikoyan, Andrei Andreyev, Lavrenty Beria and Vyacheslav Molotov), renowned pilots and military commanders (Kliment Voroshilov, Ivan Kozhedub and Alexander Pokryshkin), major scientists and leading figures in the industrial world (Sergei Vavilov, Trofim Lysenko and Alexei Stachanov). Representatives of the people from different parts of the Soviet Union are also in attendance, each clad in the richest version of his or her native folk costume. Children bearing wreaths of flowers, beaming grandmothers, joyous youths and typical representatives of the people all pay tribute to the 'father of the nation'.   Dit schilderij is speciaal voor de tentoonstelling van 'Schilderkunst uit de Sovjet-Unie' in 1950 gemaakt. Het kunstenaarscollectief heeft hier de grandioze viering van de 70ste verjaardag van Jozef Stalin in 1949 in beeld gebracht. Op triomfantelijke wijze wordt Stalin als onbetwistbaar groot leider van de staat, inspirator en organisator van grootste overwinningen neergezet. De paradetrap die omhoog leidt, de handen die het applaudisserende volk naar de jarige 'held' uitstrekt en de geopende deuren die doen denken aan de Koninklijke Poort van een iconostase, accentueren de geëxalteerde jubelstemming van de aanwezigen. Stalin wordt aan het volk getoond als een hemeling die afgedaald is naar de mensheid, dichtbij maar toch onbereikbaar. Naast hem staan zijn ondergeschikten, partijleden en leden van de regering (Nikolaj Boelganin, Artjom Mikojan, Andrej Andrejev, Lavrentij Beria, Vjatsjeslav Molotov), beroemde piloten en militaire commandanten (Kliment Vorosjilov, Ivan Kozjedoeb, Aleksander Pokrysjkin), belangrijke wetenschappers en vooraanstaanden uit de industrie (Sergej Vavilov, Trofim Lysenko, Aleksej Stachanov). Verder zijn vertegenwoordigers van de vele volkeren uit de Sovjetunie aanwezig, elk in zijn/haar karakteristieke feestelijke klederdracht. Kinderen met bloemenkransen, blij lachende oma's, gelukkige jongemannen en typische vertegenwoordigers van het volk brengen hulde aan de 'vader der natie'.
